LOOKING FOR A VOLUNTEER TO CHAIR THIS POSITION!
The Healthy Lifestyles Initiative provides PTAs with education and tools to partner with schools and advocate for healthy changes in nutrition and physical activity. In a healthy school:
- All foods, beverages and snacks sold or served meet National School Nutrition Standards.
- All students have opportunities to be physically active on a regular basis.
- All students have access to regular physical education.
- District wide wellness policies are developed, implemented and evaluated with input from students, parents, staff and interested community members.
What PTAs Can Do:
- Support Healthy School Meals
- Advocate for more physical activity and physical education in schools
- Establish School Wellness Policies
- Model positive health behaviors at your PTA meetings and fundraisers
- Participate in National PTA's Healthy Lifestyles Month
SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) is a school board appointed advisory group of individuals who represent different segments of the community. By law, a majority of the members must be persons who are parents of students enrolled in the district and who are not employed by the district. The AISD SHAC is made up of parents, community members, students, and school staff working together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs. The Allen Eagle Run is scheduled for Saturday, February 27th, 2021 at Allen Eagle Stadium. Allen Eagle Run participants from Gene M. Reed Elementary help fund our P.E. Department and are used to fund Student Scholarships and Teacher Grants. Visit the Allen Eagle Run page on the this website for more information.
The 21-Day Challenge encourages you to make healthier snack choices for the next 21 days. Every day, prepare and eat a healthy snack that contains a fruit or veggie. We encourage you and your family to participate together and share in the fun! The starting date for the challenge for the 2020-21 school year is TBD. Visit Kids Teaching Kids for more information.
International Walk to School Day is October 7, 2020. It is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration each October.
National Bike to School Day is May 5, 2020. The event builds on the popularity of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the world each October. Many communities and schools have been holding spring walk and bicycle to school events for years. National Bike to School Day provides an opportunity for schools across the country to join together to celebrate and to build off of the energy of National Bike Month.
Earth Day is April 22, 2020. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on the environmental issues that the world faces. Visit the Earth Day website for more information.
